About Chile

Chile runs like a ribbon down South America's Pacific edge, squeezed between the Andes and the ocean. From the bone-dry Atacama Desert in the north to the glaciers and fjords of Patagonia in the south, few countries pack in such contrast. The capital, Santiago, lies in a fertile central valley beneath snow-capped peaks, and Chilean territory even extends far offshore to remote Easter Island.

  • Chile stretches about 4,300 kilometres from north to south yet averages only around 180 kilometres in width.
  • Parts of Chile's Atacama Desert are so dry that some weather stations there have never recorded rainfall.
  • Chile and Ecuador are the only South American countries that do not share a border with Brazil.
