About Comoros

The Comoros is a volcanic archipelago rising from the Indian Ocean between Madagascar and the coast of Mozambique. Its capital, Moroni, lies on Grande Comore beneath Mount Karthala, one of the world's most active volcanoes. Sometimes called the 'perfume islands' for their ylang-ylang, vanilla, and clove plantations, the islands blend African, Arab, and French influences in language, food, and architecture.

  • The name Comoros derives from the Arabic 'qamar,' meaning moon, and a crescent moon features on the national flag.
  • The coelacanth, an ancient fish once thought extinct for millions of years, lives in the deep waters off the Comoros islands.
  • The Comoros is the world's leading producer of ylang-ylang essence, a flower extract prized by the luxury perfume industry.
