About Dominica

Dominica, often called the Nature Isle of the Caribbean, is a ruggedly volcanic island in the Lesser Antilles, cloaked in rainforest and laced with rivers, waterfalls, and hot springs. Its capital, Roseau, sits on the sheltered western coast beneath green mountain slopes. Less developed for mass tourism than its neighbors, the island draws hikers, divers, and whale watchers to one of the region's wildest landscapes.

  • Dominica's Boiling Lake, a flooded volcanic fumarole high in the mountains, is one of the largest hot lakes in the world.
  • Dominica's flag features the Sisserou parrot, found nowhere else on Earth, and is one of the very few national flags to include purple.
  • Columbus named the island Dominica because he sighted it on a Sunday, dies Dominica in Latin.
