Ecuador takes its name from the equator, which crosses the country just north of its capital, Quito, a city perched high in the Andes with one of the best-preserved colonial centers in the Americas. Squeezed between Colombia and Peru on South America's Pacific coast, Ecuador compresses Amazon rainforest, snow-capped volcanoes, and tropical shoreline into a compact territory, and governs the famed Galapagos Islands far offshore.

• ·Because Earth bulges at the equator, the summit of Ecuador's Chimborazo volcano is the farthest point on the planet's surface from its center.
• ·Quito and the Galapagos Islands were both among the very first sites inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1978.
