About Egypt

Egypt links Africa and Asia at the northeastern corner of the continent, its life concentrated along the Nile as it has been for five millennia. The capital, Cairo, is one of the great metropolises of the Arab world, standing near the pyramids of Giza. From pharaonic temples along the river to Red Sea reefs and the Suez Canal, few countries carry so much history in so recognizable a landscape.

  • The Great Pyramid of Giza is the only one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World still standing.
  • Egypt is a transcontinental country: the Sinai Peninsula, east of the Suez Canal, lies geographically in Asia.
  • Cairo's Arabic name, al-Qahirah, means The Victorious, given when the city was founded in the tenth century.
