Fiji is a South Pacific archipelago of more than 300 islands, most volcanic in origin and ringed by coral reefs. The capital, Suva, on the main island of Viti Levu, is one of the largest urban centers in the Pacific islands. Renowned for warm hospitality, kava ceremonies and a passion for rugby, Fiji sits at a crossroads of Melanesian and Polynesian cultures on the edge of the 180th meridian.

• ·The 180th meridian passes through Fiji's island of Taveuni, but the International Date Line bends eastward so the whole country keeps the same date.
• ·Fiji's name comes from the Tongan pronunciation of 'Viti,' which early European explorers picked up from neighboring Tonga.
• ·Villagers from Fiji's Beqa Island are famed for vilavilairevo, a centuries-old tradition of walking barefoot across searing-hot stones.
