About Haiti
Haiti occupies the mountainous western third of Hispaniola, the Caribbean island it shares with the Dominican Republic. Born of the only successful slave revolution in modern history, it became the world's first Black-led republic in 1804. From the capital, Port-au-Prince, set on a wide bay, the country rises into some of the Caribbean's highest mountain ranges. Haitian Creole and French are its official languages.
