About Jamaica

Jamaica rises green and mountainous from the Caribbean Sea, the third-largest island of the Greater Antilles. Its capital, Kingston, sits beneath the Blue Mountains, whose slopes produce some of the world's most prized coffee. The island's Taino name meant 'land of wood and water,' and its outsized cultural exports — reggae, ska, and dancehall — have carried Jamaican rhythms to every corner of the globe.

  • Jamaica's flag is the only national flag in the world that contains none of the colours red, white, or blue.
  • Ian Fleming wrote his James Bond novels at GoldenEye, his estate on Jamaica's north coast.
  • In 1962 Jamaica became the first British colony in the Caribbean to gain full independence.
