About Lebanon

Lebanon crowds striking variety into a small country on the eastern Mediterranean shore of Western Asia. Snow can cap the Mount Lebanon range while beaches bask below, and ancient cedar groves survive on the high slopes. The capital, Beirut, has traded across the sea since Phoenician times, and coastal cities such as Byblos and Sidon rank among the oldest continuously inhabited places on Earth.

  • The Phoenician alphabet, ancestor of the Greek and Latin scripts, was developed in the coastal cities of what is now Lebanon.
  • The Lebanese city of Byblos, inhabited for thousands of years, gave the Greeks their word for book — and ultimately the word 'Bible.'
  • The cedar on Lebanon's flag has symbolized the region since antiquity; Lebanon's cedars are even mentioned in the Epic of Gilgamesh.
