About Lesotho
Lesotho is a highland kingdom in Southern Africa, completely encircled by South Africa and famously mountainous from border to border. Its capital, Maseru, sits on the Caledon River at the edge of the lowlands — which here still means well over 1,000 meters above sea level. Homeland of the Basotho people, celebrated for their blankets and conical hats, Lesotho fully earns its nickname, the 'Kingdom in the Sky.'
- Lesotho is completely surrounded by South Africa, one of only three countries in the world enclosed entirely within another.
- Every part of Lesotho lies above 1,000 meters, giving it the highest lowest point of any country on Earth — about 1,400 meters.
- The mokorotlo, a conical straw hat worn by Basotho herders, is such a national symbol that it appears on Lesotho's flag.
