About Lithuania

Lithuania is the largest and southernmost of the Baltic states, a country of lakes, forests, and gently rolling plains in northeastern Europe. Its capital, Vilnius, boasts a baroque old town that ranks among the continent's largest and finest. Once the seat of a vast medieval grand duchy, Lithuania preserves a proud, distinctive language and traditions reaching back to Europe's last pagan kingdom.

  • By one French geographic institute's calculation, the geographical center of Europe lies in Lithuania, just north of Vilnius.
  • In the 15th century the Grand Duchy of Lithuania was one of Europe's largest states, stretching from the Baltic Sea toward the Black Sea.
  • Lithuanian is often called one of the most conservative living Indo-European languages, preserving ancient features shared with Sanskrit.
