Madagascar is the world's fourth-largest island, adrift in the Indian Ocean off Africa's southeastern coast. Isolated for tens of millions of years, it evolved a cast of creatures found nowhere else, from lemurs to towering baobabs. The capital, Antananarivo, spreads across highland ridges at the island's center, while landscapes range from rainforest to spiny desert. Its people trace roots to both Southeast Asia and Africa.
