About Montenegro

Montenegro is a compact Balkan country on the Adriatic coast of Southern Europe, where limestone mountains plunge into fjord-like bays. Its capital, Podgorica, sits inland, while the historic royal capital of Cetinje nestles beneath Mount Lovćen, the 'black mountain' that gave the country its name. Despite its small size, Montenegro packs in beaches, medieval walled towns, deep canyons, and Lake Skadar's bird-rich wetlands.

  • Montenegro uses the euro as its currency even though it is not a member of the European Union or the eurozone.
  • The Tara River Canyon plunges around 1,300 metres, making it one of the deepest river canyons in Europe.
  • Montenegro shares Lake Skadar, the largest lake on the Balkan Peninsula, with neighbouring Albania.
