About Morocco

Morocco occupies the northwestern corner of Africa, where the Atlantic and the Mediterranean meet just across the strait from Spain. Its capital is coastal Rabat, though the labyrinthine medinas of Fez and Marrakesh are equally storied. Framed by the Atlas Mountains and fringed by the Sahara, the kingdom blends Berber, Arab, and European influences in its cuisine, architecture, and centuries-old traditions of trade and scholarship.

  • The University of al-Qarawiyyin in Fez, founded in 859 by Fatima al-Fihri, is often cited as the world's oldest continuously operating university.
  • Only about 13 kilometres of the Strait of Gibraltar separate Morocco from Spain at the narrowest point.
  • Morocco is often cited as the first state to recognize the newly independent United States, back in 1777.
