About Nauru

Nauru is a tiny raised coral island in the Micronesian Pacific, isolated from its nearest neighbours by hundreds of kilometres of open ocean. It has no official capital city, though government offices cluster in the district of Yaren on the south coast. A fertile green strip rings the shore, while the mined-out interior bristles with jagged coral pinnacles, relics of the phosphate industry on which the country's fortunes have long risen and fallen.

  • Nauru is the world's smallest island country, covering only about 21 square kilometres.
  • Thanks to phosphate mining, Nauru once ranked among the wealthiest countries per person on Earth.
  • European sailors knew Nauru as Pleasant Island before it reverted to its Nauruan name.
