New Zealand, known in Māori as Aotearoa, lies deep in the South Pacific, where its two main islands stretch from subtropical beaches to glacier-carved fjords. The capital, Wellington, sits on a windy harbour at the southern tip of the North Island. Isolated for millions of years, the country evolved a remarkable cast of flightless birds, including the kiwi, which lends New Zealanders their nickname.
