About Nicaragua

Nicaragua, the largest country in Central America by area, stretches between the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea, its western lowlands studded with volcanoes and two vast lakes. The capital, Managua, spreads along the shore of Lake Managua, while nearby Lake Nicaragua is so large that early Spanish sailors mistook it for the sea. Colonial cities such as Granada and León rank among the oldest in the Americas.

  • Nicaragua's flag is one of only two national flags in the world to feature the colour purple, hidden in the rainbow of its emblem.
  • Lake Nicaragua is home to bull sharks that swim up the San Juan River from the Caribbean and adapt to fresh water.
  • Ometepe, a famous island in Lake Nicaragua, was formed by twin volcanoes joined by a narrow isthmus.
