About Palau

Palau is a scattering of more than 300 limestone and volcanic islands in the western Pacific, part of Oceania's Micronesia region. Its capital, Ngerulmud, is a purpose-built government seat on Babeldaob island. Famed for the mushroom-shaped Rock Islands and some of the planet's richest reef life, Palau blends traditional clan-based society with a fierce, pioneering commitment to marine conservation.

  • Ngerulmud, Palau's purpose-built capital, consists almost entirely of government buildings and is the least-populous capital city of any sovereign country.
  • In 2009 Palau declared the world's first shark sanctuary, banning commercial shark fishing across its entire ocean territory.
  • The golden jellyfish of Palau's Jellyfish Lake migrate across the water each day following the sun, and their sting is too mild to harm swimmers.
