About Philippines
The Philippines is a sprawling Southeast Asian archipelago of roughly 7,600 islands scattered between the South China Sea and the Pacific. Its capital, Manila, on the island of Luzon, anchors one of the world's most densely woven metropolitan areas. Shaped by Malay, Spanish, and American influences, the country is known for its volcanoes, rice terraces, colorful jeepneys, and a famously warm, festival-loving culture.
- The Philippines is named for Philip II of Spain, who was still a teenage prince, not yet king, when a Spanish expedition coined Las Islas Filipinas in 1543.
