About Portugal

Portugal occupies the Atlantic edge of the Iberian Peninsula in southwestern Europe, with the Azores and Madeira archipelagos far out at sea. Its capital, Lisbon, spills over sunlit hills above the Tagus River estuary and ranks among Western Europe's oldest cities. Once the launchpad of the Age of Discoveries, Portugal is celebrated for azulejo tilework, port wine, melancholy fado music, and cork oak landscapes.

  • The Anglo-Portuguese Alliance, sealed in 1373, is often described as the oldest alliance still in force between two countries.
  • Portugal produces roughly half of the world's cork, harvested from oak trees whose bark regrows after stripping.
  • Lisbon's Bertrand bookshop, opened in 1732, holds the Guinness World Records title of oldest bookstore still in operation.
