About Qatar

Qatar is a thumb-shaped desert peninsula jutting north from the Arabian Peninsula into the Persian Gulf, sharing its single land border with Saudi Arabia. Its capital, Doha, has grown from a pearling port into a skyline of futuristic towers, museums, and universities. Vast offshore natural gas fields transformed this once-modest sheikhdom, whose culture still honors falconry, dhow sailing, and Bedouin hospitality.

  • Qatar's maroon-and-white flag is the only national flag whose width is more than twice its height, with a distinctive nine-point serrated edge.
  • Qatar is one of the flattest countries on Earth, its highest ground rising barely a hundred meters above sea level.
  • Qatar has no permanent rivers; its fresh water comes overwhelmingly from desalinating seawater.
