The Solomon Islands sprawl across the southwestern Pacific east of Papua New Guinea, an archipelago of nearly a thousand islands cloaked in rainforest and ringed by reefs. The capital, Honiara, stands on Guadalcanal, an island made famous by a pivotal Second World War campaign. A stronghold of Melanesian custom and canoe-borne trade, the country is scattered across parallel chains of volcanic islands and low coral atolls.
