About Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka, a teardrop-shaped island off India's southern tip in South Asia, was known for centuries as Ceylon. Colombo, its bustling commercial capital, faces the Indian Ocean, while the interior rises to misty tea-covered highlands and storied cities such as Anuradhapura and Kandy. Famed for cinnamon, gems, and elephants, the island has been a hub of Indian Ocean trade for more than two thousand years.

  • In 1960 Sri Lanka, then called Ceylon, gave the world its first female prime minister, Sirimavo Bandaranaike.
  • Sri Lanka's official legislative capital is not Colombo but Sri Jayawardenepura Kotte, just outside the city.
  • Adam's Peak in Sri Lanka bears a footprint-shaped hollow revered by Buddhists, Hindus, Muslims, and Christians alike.
