Tajikistan, a rugged landlocked country in Central Asia, is dominated by the Pamir Mountains, whose glaciers feed some of the region's great rivers. The capital, Dushanbe, lies in a fertile western valley. Persian-speaking heirs to the Silk Road cities of the Samanid era, Tajiks trace their language and culture to ancient Sogdiana and Bactria, and welcome spring each year with the festival of Navruz.
