About Timor-Leste
Timor-Leste occupies the eastern half of the island of Timor, where Southeast Asia shades into the Pacific. From Dili, the seaside capital, rugged mountains climb steeply inland to coffee-growing highlands. Centuries of Portuguese rule left Catholic churches and a Portuguese official language alongside Tetum, while full independence, achieved in 2002, made it one of the world's youngest nations.
- Timor-Leste was the first new sovereign state of the 21st century, gaining full independence in 2002.
- Its name effectively means 'East East': 'timor' comes from the Malay word for east, and 'leste' is Portuguese for east.
