About Tonga

Tonga scatters some 170 islands across the South Pacific, governed from Nukuʻalofa on the main island of Tongatapu. The last remaining Polynesian kingdom, it was dubbed the 'Friendly Islands' by Captain James Cook. Coral atolls and volcanic peaks rise from waters visited each year by humpback whales, and rugby and church life anchor its close-knit villages.

  • Tonga was never formally colonised, keeping its own monarchy through a period as a British protectorate before resuming full sovereignty in 1970.
  • Sitting just west of the International Date Line, Tonga is among the first countries on Earth to start each new day.
  • Only 36 of Tonga's 169 islands are inhabited, scattered across an 800-kilometre stretch of the South Pacific.
