About Vanuatu

Vanuatu scatters some 80 islands in a Y-shaped chain across the South Pacific, east of Australia. Coral reefs, rainforests and rumbling volcanoes shape its landscapes, while the capital, Port Vila, overlooks a sheltered harbour on the island of Efate. Its Melanesian communities preserve remarkable cultural diversity, with village life, custom ceremonies and dozens upon dozens of distinct local languages.

  • Before independence in 1980, Vanuatu was the New Hebrides, run jointly by Britain and France — a 'condominium' that residents wryly dubbed the 'pandemonium.'
  • Mount Yasur on Tanna Island has been erupting almost continuously for centuries and is one of the world's most accessible active volcanoes.
  • Bungee jumping traces its inspiration to Pentecost Island, where land divers leap from tall wooden towers with only vines tied to their ankles.
