About Vatican City
Vatican City, an enclave entirely surrounded by Rome, is the world's smallest independent state and the spiritual centre of the Roman Catholic Church. Within its walls stand St Peter's Basilica, the Sistine Chapel and museums holding masterpieces by Michelangelo and Raphael. The city-state doubles as its own capital, governed by the pope from this tiny walled territory in southern Europe.
- The Vatican has the world's shortest national railway: about 300 metres of track and a single station.
