About Venezuela

Venezuela crowns the northern coast of South America, its Caribbean shoreline backed by Andean peaks, vast plains and the table mountains of the Guiana Highlands. The capital, Caracas, fills a narrow valley beneath the green wall of the Ávila mountain range. The Orinoco River threads the country's interior, and its landscapes span everything from cloud forest to desert dunes.

  • Angel Falls in Venezuela's Canaima National Park is the world's tallest uninterrupted waterfall, plunging about 979 metres.
  • The name Venezuela is often traced to 'little Venice,' reportedly coined when European explorers saw stilt houses along Lake Maracaibo.
  • Storms near Lake Maracaibo's Catatumbo River produce lightning so frequently the area records some of the highest flash rates on Earth.
