About Bulgaria

Bulgaria sits in southeastern Europe's Balkan region, where the Balkan Mountains slope down to golden Black Sea beaches. Its capital, Sofia, shelters Roman ruins beneath modern boulevards, while monasteries and Thracian tombs dot the countryside. Founded in the seventh century, Bulgaria gave the world the Cyrillic alphabet and remains famous for its Rose Valley, whose blossoms supply perfume makers across the globe.

  • Bulgaria has kept the same name since its founding in 681 AD, one of the oldest surviving state names in Europe.
  • The bacterium that ferments traditional yogurt, Lactobacillus bulgaricus, is named after Bulgaria, where it was first identified.
  • In traditional Bulgarian body language, a nod means 'no' and a shake of the head means 'yes,' the reverse of most of Europe.
