About Romania

Romania occupies the southeastern corner of Europe, where the Carpathian Mountains curl through forested highlands before the Danube fans out into its vast delta on the Black Sea. Its capital, Bucharest, was once nicknamed Little Paris for its elegant boulevards and Belle Epoque architecture. Beyond the cities lie Transylvania's fortified churches, painted monasteries, and the castles that fed the Dracula legend.

  • Romanian is the only major Romance language in Eastern Europe, an island of Latin speech surrounded by Slavic- and Hungarian-speaking neighbors.
  • Bucharest's Palace of the Parliament is listed by Guinness World Records as the heaviest building on Earth, weighing around four million tonnes.
  • Timisoara switched on fully electric street lighting in 1884, a first for continental Europe, with 731 lamps along nearly 60 kilometers of cable.
