About Burkina Faso

Burkina Faso is a landlocked country on the sun-baked savannas of West Africa, its name meaning 'land of upright people.' The capital, Ouagadougou, affectionately shortened to Ouaga, is a hub of African cinema and culture. Formerly known as Upper Volta after the rivers that rise within its borders, the country is celebrated for its music, masks, and long tradition of craftsmanship.

  • Until 1984 the country was called Upper Volta, after the Black, White, and Red Volta rivers that rise within its territory.
  • Ouagadougou hosts FESPACO, the largest film festival in Africa, which has drawn filmmakers to the capital since 1969.
  • The demonym Burkinabè draws on a third language, Fulfulde, adding its suffix for 'people' to a name already built from Mooré and Dioula words.
