About Niger

Niger, a vast landlocked nation in West Africa, takes its name from the great river that waters its far southwest — nearly everywhere else, the Sahara and the Sahel dominate. The capital, Niamey, spreads along the Niger River's banks. Camel caravans still cross the Ténéré desert, ancient trans-Saharan trade routes pass through the historic city of Agadez, and dinosaur fossils lie beneath the sands.

• ·The Tree of Ténéré in Niger was once considered the most isolated tree on Earth, over 150 km from any other, until it was knocked down by a truck in 1973.
• ·Niger shares W National Park with Benin and Burkina Faso, named for the W-shaped double bend of the Niger River that runs through it.
• ·Fossils of Sarcosuchus, a prehistoric crocodile nicknamed 'SuperCroc' that dwarfed any living crocodile, were unearthed in Niger's Ténéré desert.
