About Burundi

Burundi is one of Africa's smallest countries, a hilly, densely settled land in the Great Lakes region of East Africa. Its political capital is Gitega, while lakeside Bujumbura remains the commercial hub on the shores of Lake Tanganyika. Once a centuries-old kingdom ruled by monarchs called mwamis, Burundi is renowned for its royal drummers, whose thunderous performances are recognized by UNESCO.

  • In 2019 Burundi moved its political capital from Bujumbura to Gitega, though Bujumbura remains the economic hub.
  • Lake Tanganyika, which forms part of Burundi's border, is the longest freshwater lake in the world and the second deepest.
  • A hillside spring in southern Burundi is often cited as the southernmost source of the Nile, feeding waters that travel thousands of kilometers to the sea.
