About DR Congo

The Democratic Republic of the Congo sprawls across the heart of Africa, second in area only to Algeria on the continent and centered on the vast basin of the Congo River. Its capital, Kinshasa, hums with music and commerce on the river's southern bank. From equatorial rainforest, the world's second largest, to volcanic highlands in the east, the country holds extraordinary biodiversity, including species found nowhere else.

  • The Congo River is the deepest river in the world, plunging more than 200 meters in places along its lower course.
  • Kinshasa and Brazzaville, capitals of the two Congos, face each other across the Congo River, the closest pair of capitals after Rome and Vatican City.
  • The bonobo, one of humankind's closest living relatives, lives in the wild only in the forests of DR Congo.
