Cameroon, wedged between West and Central Africa, is nicknamed 'Africa in miniature' for packing rainforests, mountains, savannas, and Atlantic beaches into a single country. Governed from the hilltop capital Yaoundé, it is officially bilingual in French and English, with hundreds of local languages spoken besides. Mount Cameroon, an active volcano, towers above the Atlantic shore west of Douala, the country's bustling port city.

• ·Cameroon's name comes from the Portuguese 'Rio dos Camarões,' or 'River of Prawns,' after the shrimp early explorers found in the Wouri River.
• ·Mount Cameroon rises almost straight from the Atlantic to over 4,000 meters and is one of the highest peaks in West and Central Africa.
• ·Lake Nyos in Cameroon is one of only three lakes on Earth known to hold huge amounts of dissolved carbon dioxide that can erupt from its depths.
