About Equatorial Guinea
Equatorial Guinea is a small Central African nation split between a mainland region called Rio Muni and a scattering of islands in the Gulf of Guinea. Malabo, on the volcanic island of Bioko, long served as the capital before that role passed to Ciudad de la Paz, a city purpose-built in the mainland rainforest. Spanish colonial heritage blends with the cultures of the Fang and Bubi peoples.
- Equatorial Guinea is the only African country where Spanish is an official language.
- Despite its name, no part of Equatorial Guinea touches the equator: the mainland lies just north of it and the island of Annobon just south.
