Djibouti occupies a strategic corner of the Horn of Africa, where the Red Sea narrows into the Bab-el-Mandeb strait on the way to the Indian Ocean. Its capital, Djibouti City, shares its name with the country and handles shipping for much of the region. Inland, the landscape turns otherworldly: salt lakes, volcanic plains, and rift valleys mark one of the hottest, most geologically active places on Earth.
