About Eritrea
Eritrea stretches along the Red Sea in the Horn of Africa, climbing from one of the hottest, lowest deserts on Earth to a cool highland plateau. Its capital, Asmara, perches on that plateau, where palm-lined boulevards, cafes and cinemas preserve a distinctive legacy of Italian rule. Offshore, the islands of the Dahlak Archipelago lie scattered across its Red Sea waters.
- Eritrea takes its name from Erythra Thalassa, the ancient Greek name for the Red Sea.
- Asmara is a UNESCO World Heritage Site prized for its remarkably intact 1930s Italian modernist architecture.
- Sitting about 2,300 meters above sea level, Asmara ranks among the highest capital cities in Africa.
