About Hungary

Hungary lies landlocked in the Carpathian Basin of Central Europe, bisected by the Danube as it flows through the capital, Budapest. Heirs to Magyar tribes who arrived in the ninth century, Hungarians speak a language unlike those of any neighbor. The country is known for thermal baths, paprika-laced cuisine, Lake Balaton's summer shores, and a capital so grand it is often called the 'Pearl of the Danube.'

  • Budapest was created in 1873 by uniting three towns: Buda and Óbuda on the Danube's west bank and Pest on the east.
  • Hungarian belongs to the Uralic language family, making it unrelated to the languages of all of Hungary's neighbors.
  • The Rubik's Cube was invented in Budapest in 1974 by Hungarian architecture professor Ernő Rubik.
