About Iran

Iran occupies a high plateau in Western Asia, ringed by mountain chains and flanked by the Caspian Sea and the Persian Gulf. Its sprawling capital, Tehran, rests beneath the snow-capped Alborz range. Heir to ancient Persia, the country boasts millennia of continuous civilization, from the ruins of Persepolis to exquisite traditions of poetry, carpet weaving, and garden design that have influenced cultures far beyond its borders.

  • Iran was known internationally as Persia until 1935, when its government asked other countries to use the name Iran.
  • Iran's Lut Desert has registered some of the hottest land-surface temperatures ever measured by satellite.
  • Ancient Persian engineers built qanats, underground channels that carry water for miles, some of which still function after more than 2,000 years.
