About Iraq

Iraq lies at the eastern edge of the Arab world in Western Asia, watered by the Tigris and Euphrates rivers that made ancient Mesopotamia bloom. Its capital, Baghdad, straddles the Tigris and was once the dazzling center of the Islamic Golden Age. Often called the cradle of civilization, this land saw the rise of the world's first cities and some of humanity's earliest written laws.

• ·The earliest known writing, cuneiform script, emerged in ancient Sumer in what is now southern Iraq more than 5,000 years ago.
• ·Iraq occupies most of ancient Mesopotamia, whose Greek name means 'land between the rivers' — the Tigris and the Euphrates.
• ·Medieval Baghdad housed the House of Wisdom, a celebrated center of scholarship and translation during the Islamic Golden Age.
