South Sudan, in east-central Africa, emerged as an independent state in 2011 after decades of struggle, making it one of the world's youngest countries. Its capital, Juba, lies on the White Nile, which winds north through the vast Sudd wetlands. Beyond the river, savannas and floodplains host enormous seasonal wildlife migrations, while dozens of ethnic groups, including the Dinka and Nuer, give the young nation a rich cultural mosaic.
