About United Arab Emirates

The United Arab Emirates occupies the southeastern corner of the Arabian Peninsula, where seven sheikhdoms joined in the early 1970s to form a single federation. The capital, Abu Dhabi, sits on a Persian Gulf island, while Dubai has become a byword for audacious architecture. Beyond the glittering coastal cities lie red dunes, ancient oases and the fringes of the vast Empty Quarter desert.

  • When it opened in 2010, Dubai's Burj Khalifa became, at over 828 metres, the tallest structure humans had ever built.
  • In Arabic, Abu Dhabi's name is usually translated as 'father of the gazelle.'
  • Falcons are so prized in Emirati culture that the UAE issues them their own passports for air travel.
