About Oman

Oman occupies the southeastern corner of the Arabian Peninsula in Western Asia, where the rugged Hajar Mountains meet desert dunes and a long Indian Ocean coastline. Its capital, Muscat, has been a trading port for centuries, linking Arabia with Africa and Asia. Famed for frankincense, dhow-building, and hundreds of historic forts, Oman is one of the Arab world's oldest independent states.

  • The Omani exclave of Madha contains a still smaller UAE enclave called Nahwa — a country inside a country inside a country.
  • In the 19th century Oman's sultans ruled a maritime empire from Zanzibar, an island off the coast of East Africa.
  • Each summer the khareef monsoon drapes Oman's southern Dhofar region in mist, briefly turning its desert hills green.
