About Yemen

Yemen anchors the southwestern corner of the Arabian Peninsula, where the Red Sea meets the Gulf of Aden. Its capital, Sana'a, perched high in the mountains, is celebrated for ancient tower houses of mudbrick and stained glass. Once the heart of the incense trade, the land the Romans called Arabia Felix also gave the world some of its first cultivated coffee, shipped from the port of Mokha.

• ·The coffee term 'mocha' comes from Mokha, the Yemeni Red Sea port that dominated the world coffee trade in the 1600s.
• ·Shibam, in Yemen's Hadhramaut valley, is nicknamed the 'Manhattan of the Desert' for its centuries-old mudbrick tower blocks up to 11 stories tall.
• ·On Yemen's island of Socotra, roughly a third of the plant species, including the umbrella-shaped dragon's blood tree, grow nowhere else on Earth.
