About Zambia

Zambia spreads across a high plateau in south-central Africa, a landlocked country named for the Zambezi River that rises in its northwest. From the capital, Lusaka, the land rolls out to copper-rich hills, vast national parks such as South Luangwa, and the roaring lip of Victoria Falls, which Zambia shares with Zimbabwe. More than seventy ethnic groups give the country a famously easygoing, multilingual character.

• ·Zambia's border with Botswana at Kazungula is only about 150 meters long, one of the shortest international borders in the world.
• ·Victoria Falls is known locally as Mosi-oa-Tunya, 'the smoke that thunders,' for spray that can be seen from many kilometers away.
• ·Lake Kariba, shared by Zambia and Zimbabwe, is the world's largest human-made reservoir by volume.
